Did you know that every time you put the washing machine you release microplastics to the sea?
The European project MERMAIDS will distribute 100% cotton bags for use in washing machines, to raise awareness about the release of plastic microfibers that come from our synthetic fabrics and that end up in the sea.
Did you know…?
Each wash of synthetic fabrics or composite fabrics (for example, those that combine cotton plus polyester) releases small plastic fibers less than one millimeter in length that are not retained in the filters of our washing machines. The wastewater treatment plants let them pass and they end up in the sea, being able to become food for marine species. The fish confuse these microfibers with algae and eat them, causing important problems for the health of these species that are part of our diet and therefore also for the health of people.
Do you look at the labels on your clothes? Did you know this effect of dressing with synthetic fabrics? Do you want to help mitigate it?
In the framework of the European project MERMAIDS, the LEITAT technology center has designed a campaign to raise awareness among the population about this problem of which we are all part. Under the motto “CARE YOUR CLOTHES, CARE FOR YOUR ENVIRONMENT”.
These bags will be offered for the washing of synthetic garments (polyester, acrylic or nylon, for example), so that these garments have less friction during washing, thus releasing less plastic fibers. Unlike other wash bags made with nylon, these are 100% cotton, which are free to release plastic fibers during washing.
The objective of the campaign is to sensitize consumers about this environmental problem, and thus become aware of how our most daily habits affect us all.

About MERMAIDS: The technological center Leitat, together with the rest of the multidisciplinary consortium of the MERMAIDS project, works to mitigate the environmental impact of microplastic and nanoplastic particles resulting from wastewater from washing on European (marine) ecosystems. It does so by showing and applying innovative technologies and additives in both the washing processes and textile finishing treatments. MERMAIDS does not develop new technologies, but aims to apply scientific and technological knowledge already developed.

El proyecto europeo MERMAIDS distribuirá bolsas 100% de algodón para su uso en lavadoras, para concienciar asà sobre la liberación de las microfibras de plástico que proceden de nuestros tejidos sintéticos y que acaban en el mar.

Cada lavado de tejidos sintéticos o de tejidos compuestos (por ejemplo, aquellos que combinan algodón más poliéster) libera pequeñas fibras de plástico de menos de un milÃmetro de longitud que no se retienen en los filtros de nuestras lavadoras. Las plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales las dejan pasar y éstas acaban en el mar, pudiendo convertirse en alimento para las especies marinas. Los peces confunden estas microfibras con algas y se las comen, ocasionando problemas importantes para la salud de estas especies que forman parte de nuestra dieta y por tanto también para la salud de las personas.

En el marco del proyecto europeo MERMAIDS, el centro tecnológico LEITAT ha diseñado una campaña para concienciar a la población acerca de este problema del que todos formamos parte. Bajo el lema “CUIDA TU ROPA, CUIDA TU MEDIO AMBIENTEâ€.
Estas bolsas se ofrecerán para el lavado de prendas sintéticas (poliéster, acrÃlica o nylon, por ejemplo), de manera que estas prendas tengan menos fricción durante el lavado, desprendiendo asà menos fibras de plástico. A diferencia de otras bolsas de lavado fabricadas con nylon, éstas son 100% de algodón, con lo que están exentas de liberar fibras de plástico durante el lavado.
El objetivo de la campaña es sensibilizar a los consumidores acerca de este problema medioambiental, y asà se tome conciencia de cómo nuestros hábitos más cotidianos nos afectan a todos.
La campaña se desarrollará a lo largo del mes de diciembre, hasta fin de existencias. Ven a LEITAT para recoger la tuya!
Sobre MERMAIDS: El centro tecnológico Leitat, junto con el resto del consorcio multidisciplinar del proyecto MERMAIDS, trabaja para mitigar el impacto medioambiental de las partÃculas de microplástico y nanoplástico resultantes de las aguas residuales del lavado sobre los ecosistemas (marinos) europeos. Lo hace mostrando y aplicando tecnologÃas innovadoras y aditivos tanto en los procesos de lavado como en los tratamientos de acabado textil. MERMAIDS no desarrolla nuevas tecnologÃas, sino que pretende aplicar conocimientos cientÃficos y tecnológicos ya desarrollados.
