WAITRO Innovation Award 2021 Winners Announced

The winners of the WAITRO Innovation Award (WIA) 2021 have been selected and Leitat, is one of them. Two project teams will be awarded US$25,000 each to kick-start their projects on Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 2 – Zero Hunger.

The WAITRO Secretariat in consultation with the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) have selected the winning project teams taking into consideration the Impact, Feasibility, Level of Innovation and Technical Quality, Team Strength and International Collaboration.

The SMARTinFOOD proposal aims to address nutrition security and sustainability in vulnerable areas through circular bioeconomy, by applying technologies on insect farming as the main vector for the valorisation of agricultural waste and its conversion into food and feed products. The consortium has been established through SAIRA platform, and is led by Leitat with the participation of the partners listed below:

  • Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO), Nigeria.
  • Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), South Africa.
  • Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), Thailand.
