Research of new generations of cellulose micro and nanoparticles for use in strategic industrial products.

ABSTRACT

The aim of reducing the environmental impact derived from different technological processes combined to the necessity of achieving a more secure supply of resources sparked the bioeconomy concept. Regarding this new concept, cellulose which is the most abundant natural polymer on Earth, can be transformed in a wide array of high-added value products such as micro and nanocellulose with promising and outstanding properties. Moreover, because of the hydrophilic nature of cellulose, micro and nanocellulose modification is of interest to add new interesting properties to these particles and open up new possibilities in the most strategic sectors of the economy and products which pursue improvement. A proof of this is that the micro and nanocellulose global market estimates that by 2021 the revenues will reach €500
million and a 30% growth between 2016 and 2021.
