E2SG awarded with the ECSEL Innovation Award at the European Nanoelectronics Forum
The E2SG project was awawrded with the ECSEL Innovation Award at the European Nanoelectronics Forum that took place in Berlin on the 1st and 2nd of December 2015. This is a great acknowledgement of theexcellent work and results achieved during the project. The ECSEL Innovation Award is given by the European Commission to reward the most innovative idea developed under the FP7 projects.
The E2SG project, or Energy to Smart Grid, was defined to devise and design mechanisms and policies to assemble, monitor and control smart grids, i.e. a set of interconnected nodes whose primary goal is to generate, exchange and consume electrical energy in the most efficient and reliable way by exploiting distributed information that is sensed, transmitted and processed over the same set of nodes and links.
To do so, E2SG aims at developing and demonstrating key enabling technologies in the following fields
- node-grid interfaces – especially between generating nodes and the grid
- grid-sensing/metering – to collect the information needed for management and control
- over-the-grid communication – to effectively carry sensing and control information where it is needed
- grid-topology and control – to understand and design connection-induced behaviours improving reliability and to control (local) energy production/distribution by exploiting advanced storage policies and
- energy routing – to develop flexible and efficient mechanism to transmit energy between nodes, e.g., by properly choosing AC or DC links depending on temporary operating conditions for power consumption.
29 leading European companies and academic institutions out of 9 European countries work together on this 3 years project which is partly funded by the ENIAC Joint Undertaking and the member states. The well balanced consortium includes prominent semiconductor / IT companies, research institutes, a utility company and innovative medium-sized and small enterprises.
